Must-See TV: Oprah's Original Audition Tape
Earlier today I came across this video of Oprah Winfrey sharing the original audition tape that launched her career in Chicago. It's so fascinating! So often we only consider what a person has achieved and we sometimes never really consider the hard work that makes people successful.
Watch below as Ms. Winfrey gives a quick overview of her early career. She describes how she wasn't prepared to submit all the application materials required for what turned out to be an opportunity of a lifetime, but she stayed up all night to make sure she completed her audition tape because she had to have that job!
Queendom, if you want something, go for it!

Living Single: Why I Am Unfazed By Valentine's Day Hoopla
Queendom, we're family now, right? I feel like we are so I'm comfortable having this discussion. Last Friday was a pretty chill day for me. I worked most of the day and went to my weekly yoga class which is always an amazing and challenging experience. It was packed as usual. Afterwards I ran to the grocery store, showered, and cooked something awesome.
It wasn't until the next day that I was reminded that Friday was Valentine's Day. If the sales on overstocked candy at my local CVS were not enough of a reminder, a conversation with my local gas station homie was another.
This was the convo:
Homie: How are you? How was your Valentine's Day?
Me: Oh, Friday was great! Or are you asking if I had a valentine?
Homie: Yes, that's what I'm asking. Did you have a valentine?
Me: No I didn't.
Homie: Why? You seem really nice.
Me: I am really nice. - LOL! - Did you have a valentine? You seem really nice too.
Homie: No, I hung out with family.
Me: Well since we're both really nice I'm sure we will one day find awesome people.
Homie: I agree. See you next time!
Now, before you start with the "hey, why don't you guys date" comments, the title of this article is "Living Single" so let's stay focused. - LOL! The reality is that on Friday I couldn't care less that it was Valentine's Day. I am sure that a lot of women and even men who found themselves without a valentine on Valentine's Day may have been bummed. I wasn't bummed at all and here's why:
I Don't Have Time For Bandits
Do you know what a bandit is? Most of us have come across them. I know I have. A bandit is a person you are seeing who you really have no business with. It's not going to really go anywhere because you really aren't compatible. The bandit may be inconsistent in his or her actions or even disrespectful, but you continue spending time with him or her because you are lonely or "hungry". ;) If a person you are seeing is inconsistent and displays shady character traits, he or she is a bandit. And, if I rather run financial regressions than spend time with you it's a waste of time. And who has time to waste?
I Am Thankful For The Opportunity To Be Selfish
I am a Libra so we're all for partnership. So if the right person comes along who convinces me that I'm better paired, he will be a very lucky man! LOL! In the meantime, I choose to use this time to focus on using my skills and talents so I can leave my mark on the world, travel when I can, and do other things that make me a better me. - Being selfish can be good, right? LOL!
I Keep Good Company
If you don't have great people in your life, find some. Having great friends makes this life journey so much richer. If things are going well, celebrations ensue. If things are not going so well, great friends are there for those times too! And we won't even mention the game nights, parties, brunches, and all around silliness and joy that great friends bring.
I Know Myself
I have accomplished and experienced a lot while single including traveling long distances and living in foreign lands, or staying local and spending quality time alone. Times of solitude are great times to check in with yourself to see how you're feeling, assess where you are, and where you want to go. If you are someone who does want to be in a partnership at some point, knowing yourself can also help you identify people with whom you are most compatible, and help you communicate your needs when you are in a relationship worthy of your time, love, and compromise.
Are you single? Were you affected by the Valentine's Day hoopla?

Queendom Reflections: Five Must-Haves When Going Natural
Five Must-Haves When Going Natural
I decided to go natural for a number of reasons. The first reason is because I am more than half way through my twenties and I realize I have permed, fried, glued, and weaved up my hair, and never have I once considered embracing it as it is. Yes, there is nothing easy about having natural hair, however, for the first time I am learning new things about myself, and about the awesome people around me who are also embracing this natural hair journey. Yes, you heard me correctly. It’s a journey!
Through this experience I have really learned the significance of self-love. I have spent the last 28 years obsessing over my hair in every way imaginable. Those who are closest to me know that under any and every circumstance, rain, storm, work, or tornado, I will make my way to a hair salon. I have always believed that that if someone’s hair looks a mess, then they must be a mess, so you can understand my concern!
Hair was one of the ways I masked the things I did not want people to know or ever pick up about me. Learning to embrace all of me is my goal and I know I need to remember that my hair is beautiful. Every strand, curl, or nap, it’s all me, and it’s beautiful! For those willing to take the leap, take it from me, you CAN learn to do your hair as an adult. I learn something new everyday!
Here are my five must-haves for those considering going natural:
A great support system: My sistah friends are the best. I am blessed to be surrounded by cross-generational wisdom and love. They listen to me vent when I get discouraged, and remind me of my true beauty.
The natural hair blogs: They are helpful and overwhelming at the same time. Find a salon that you trust and keep it simple. No blog post can prepare you for the emotions you may feel. For me some days are good and other days I want to cry. I almost feel as though I am going through a break-up, yet an extraordinary break-up that leads to self-discovery.
Self-esteem: You hair is your hair!!! Love your hair the same way you love other people’s hair.
My Jewels: My Crowning Jewels help reinforce my self-esteem. On those days when my inner beauty has a hard time being reflected on the outside, my Glamour Band reminds me that I am a queen. I also have a Night Jewel. I am too fly, fabulous, and sassy to not be feeling like a queen 24-7!
Emotional Health: During this process I am becoming even more in tune with my emotional health, and I am even more comfortable receiving compliments on my new style!

Queendom Member Reflections: Lessons Learned From "The Budgetnista"
Earlier this month I attended the My Crowning Jewel “Living Richer” event where Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche was the featured speaker. I logged on thinking I would receive some tips and tricks regarding personal finance, but left feeling empowered to truly “LIVE RICHER.”
As The Budgetnista so eloquently put it, creating financial freedom for yourself enables you to pursue the things that truly make you happy. For me that is moving steadfast toward my dream of becoming a successful mommy-blogger, and the completion of my cookbook for baby foods and family meals.
Three jewels The Budgetnista shared that resonate with me are:
1. Find ways to earn passive income. – Identify sources of income that do not require any direct input from you once up and running. An example of this would be a book or some sort of product that can stand alone and sell itself after a proper marketing campaign. This will guarantee some level of financial freedom.
2. Allocate revenues into categories for expenses based on percentages. – This one is for my entrepreneur (sole proprietor) friends. It sounds tricky, but the concept is quite simple. Since revenues for entrepreneurs is oftentimes not a fixed amount, the best way to ensure that all bases are covered in terms of business and personal expenses (including taxes) is to assign a percentage to each expense category and then allocate your chosen percentage of revenue, regardless of the amount (whether it is $5 or $5,000), into each category. This will ensure that you equitably cover all of your bases.
3. Create a separate bank account for each financial goal. – Let’s say in 2013 you would like to buy a house, create a nest egg, and take a family trip to Paris; In order to save for each of these goals The Budgetnista recommends that you have a separate bank account for each, and that you deposit a percentage of income into each of these accounts on a regular basis.

Happy International Women's Day
Today is International Women's Day. I am so thankful for all the wonderful women in my life, and for all the women who paved the way so I can walk (and run) fearlessly in the direction of my dreams.
It would be very difficult to list each and every woman whom I admire and to whom I owe so much gratitude without forgetting someone. - I would not want to do that.
So to all the women out there, THANK YOU for all you do. We all know the Earth rotates; I believe we women are the axis. The seasons may change and storms may come, but we continue in support of each other, our families, our friends, society, and hopefully ourselves.
Happy International Women's Day Queendom!
